Automatic Retirement Fund Rebalancing

Main Problem:

  • Jim Covert wants to automate the rebalancing of his tax-advantaged retirement account but is currently doing it manually and is looking for a way to set this up automatically.

Discussed Solutions:

  • Fidelity offers a product called Fidelity Solo Fidfolios that could help automate the process, though it comes with a cost.
  • Jim expressed interest in finding a target date fund to achieve similar results but is concerned about higher expense ratios.
  • Fidelity indicated that they do not currently support APIs but are gathering feedback for potential future implementation.
  • Fidelity provided a link for more information on how third-party apps access user data.

I’ve got a certain allocation ratio that I’d like to keep my tax-advantaged retirement account at. From the research I’ve been doing, it seems like I’ll need to rebalance it manually every so often. Is there a way to set this up to happen automatically after x number of months? I assume the answer is no, not for free at least. So my follow-up question is this: Is there a Fidelity API I can hit to get information about my account? Even a read-only view would save me half the work I’m currently doing. Today, I login, copy the quantities and values (and a few other fields) into a spreadsheet, which tells me what adjustments I need to make to keep the percentages.

Thanks for the question @Jim Covert. The quick answer here is that we do offer a product that allows you to accomplish what you described called Fidelity Solo Fidfolios. You can learn more and view FAQs for this product here: https://www.fidelity.com/direct-indexing/customized-investing/overview At this time, we don’t support API’s but have received a lot of feedback on adding them from our various social media communities. I’m happy to pass along additional feedback on your behalf regarding this. Please let me know if you have any other questions!🟢

Yeah, I saw Fidfolios – but I’d rather not pay because I’m too lazy to do something myself, ya know? Also, I could probably find a target date fund that has the similar characteristics to the portfolio I’m trying to build, but again – expense ratios are higher, and I don’t really want to pay for something I can do myself. Thank you, please do forward that API request along. Other platforms have APIs, and I was hoping with the launch of the new Trading Dashboard that some endpoints may come along with it. How do services like Mint and Personal Capital get my information from Fidelity without API access? Surely they’re not logging in as me and scraping the pages…

You’re welcome and we will do. You can learn more about how third-party websites and apps access and use your data here: https://www.fidelity.com/security/third-party-app-protection

> What’s being done to allow third-party sites and apps to access my Fidelity information? > > We’re working with these sites and apps to allow you to access your information outside Fidelity when and where it’s convenient for you—but only while ensuring these access points meet our own high security standards.
^ Gotcha, thank you for the link. So there is API access, just not for us normies?
