Exercising/Selling Options afterhours

Here’s a summary of the user’s main problem and the solutions discussed:

  • Main Problem: The user is unsure if they can sell a call option during extended hours trading, as their trading platform only shows the price at the day’s close.
  • Solution by Baba: Some options can be traded until 4:15 PM, but options trading is generally not available after hours except for specific cases like SPY.
  • Detailed Solution by Fidelity: Extended-hours trading for certain options is available through the Directed Trading Ticket and Multi-Leg Option Trade ticket on Active Trader Pro (ATP). Users must check eligibility and can only place orders good for the extended session.
  • Additional Details: Fidelity allows trading for SPX options in pre-market sessions and provides guidance on how to enable extended hours information on charts within ATP.

I recently dipped my toes into options trading and bought a single call on a stock a few weeks ago Just now, it began to spike in after hours Am I able to sell to close during extended hours? Whenever I set trade to options, it just shows the price at the day’s close, not the AH price

Some options can be bought and sold until 4:15 such as SPY, but I don’t think you can trade options after hours other than that.

Hi there. Thanks for stopping by with your question about trading options. I’m happy to help! Currently, extended-hours trading is only available for certain options orders when placed through the Directed Trading Ticket and the Multi-Leg Option Trade ticket on Active Trader Pro (ATP). There is a 200 contact limit per order in the pre-market session. Each exchange defines which securities are eligible for extended-hours trading. It is also important to note that if an options trade is placed during an extended-hours session, the order is only good for that session. Extended Hours trading is available on the Fidelity Mobile app, Fidelity.com, and Active Trader Pro (ATP), but again, at this time, certain options orders are only available on ATP. To place an extended hours trade on ATP, you must first click on “Trade and Orders,” and then select “Directed Trade & Extended Hours.” Currently, Fidelity offers trading for SPX options in the pre-market sessions during the hours of 7:00 a.m. to 9:15 a.m., ET, and during the normal market hours of 9:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m., ET. During the extended-hours sessions, you can view the charts and real-time security information on ATP. Once logged in, select “Charts” at the top of the screen to create a new chart, and then search for the security you’re researching. Within the “Settings” you’ll want to check the box to enable “Extended Hours” information to display on the chart.
