Fidelity account balance is different from investment total

Summary of the User’s Issue and Solutions Discussed:

  • The main problem reported by Ethan is the discrepancy between his account balance ($85) and the amount available for investment ($100), despite having deposited $100 into his account.
  • FidelityLinsey explains that this could be due to a collection period for recently deposited funds, which can take 2 to 6 business days to become fully available for withdrawal.
  • Users can view the expected collection times for their deposits by logging into Fidelity and checking the “Upcoming Activity” or “Transactions” tabs under “Cash Management.”
  • To avoid collection periods in the future, FidelityLinsey recommends using bank wires or direct deposits, which are fully collected upon receipt.
  • If the discrepancy is related to recent sales of securities, the proceeds may not yet be available, as stock and ETF trades settle two business days after the trade date.

Hi @Ethan. It sounds like you may have recently deposited funds into your Fidelity cash account or recently sold some securities. When you deposit funds to your Fidelity accounts, some methods have a collection period. During the collection period, the funds are not available to withdraw from the account; however, Fidelity allows clients to place trades for most securities online with uncollected funds immediately, subject to security type and up to certain dollar limits. To review collection timeframes, electronic funds transfers (EFT) can take 2 to 6 business days to fully collect, and check deposit collection periods can vary. Still, most are fully collected within 2-6 business days. You can see when your deposit is expected to be collected on Fidelity.com by following the steps below (Login required): 1. Click “Accounts & Trade” in the top left corner and select “Cash Management” in the dropdown 2. Choose your specific account in the left column 3. Review the “Upcoming Activity” or “Transactions” tabs In the future, if you wish to avoid collection periods, bank wires and direct deposits are fully collected upon receipt. You can learn more about deposit methods below: Depositing Money Into Fidelity: https://www.fidelity.com/customer-service/deposit-money Now, if you recently sold securities, the sale proceeds will settle and show in your “Available to Withdraw” balance depending on the type of security. Stock and ETF trades settle two business days after the trade date (T+2), while mutual fund settlement can depend on the fund, but typically they settle within one to two business days. If there is anything we can clarify, please don’t hesitate to ask! We’re always happy to help. 🟢
