Foreign ETF as “Unknown” under Asset allocation?

Here’s a summary of the main problem reported by the user and the solutions discussed:

  • Main Problem: The user, MLG, is experiencing an issue where international ETFs purchased on non-US exchanges are categorized as “Unknown” instead of being identified as “Foreign stock” on the Fidelity platform.
  • Solution Provided: FidelityHeather explained that asset classifications in Full View are automatically assigned, and clients cannot make changes to these classifications.
  • Additional Guidance: MLG was advised to check the asset allocation under the “Analysis” tab on the Fidelity website for a breakdown of all assets, which might provide more clarity about the allocations.
  • Feedback Acknowledgment: FidelityHeather indicated that the issue would be forwarded as feedback to the Full View development team for consideration in future updates.

Hi, I bought two international ETFs (listed in the Swiss Exchange) yesterday, and they display as “Unknown” under my Asset Allocation. Shouldn’t they appear as “Foreign stock” instead? Thanks!

Thank you for stopping by our Discord, @MLG. It sounds like you may be referring to Full View. I’m happy to provide some information. Generally, asset classifications are automatically assigned in Full View, and clients cannot make changes to these allocations. I’ll pass your post along as feedback for our Full View development team to review. Many of the changes and feature updates we make are based on input from clients like you, so I appreciate you sharing this here. In the meantime, you can view your asset allocation under your portfolio “Analysis” tab. After logging into Fidelity.com, select the “More” tab on your Portfolio page, and then choose “Analysis.” From here, you can choose the drop-down next to “Goal View” and set the accounts you want to view under your asset allocation. Once you have your accounts chosen, click the “Learn more about your asset allocation” link under the pie chart to go to a breakdown of all your assets. If what we described above is not what you were referring to or if you have additional questions, please let us know! We are always happy to help. 🟢

Thanks, @FidelityHeather. The problem I have is that Fidelity platform doesn’t seem to identify ETFs bought in non-US Exchanges as foreign equity, and puts them into the “Unknown category”. This happens both in Full View and in the Asset Allocation screen under Account View, as you may see in the screenshot below: Image
