Options Order Ticket Failure

Summary of User’s Issues and Solutions:

  • Main Problem: The user is unable to place options orders at 8:30 AM CST, experiences slow performance on the options page, and faces issues with market orders not processing properly.
  • Solution for Order Timing: The user should be aware that options trading is available during regular trading hours (9:30 AM to 4:00 PM ET) and can also be conducted in Extended Hours Trading (EHT) on specific platforms.
  • Extended Hours Trading Details: To trade options during EHT, the user must select “Pre-Market” in the “Session” dropdown for eligible options, which currently include only .SPX, .SPXW, and .VIX options.
  • Recommendation for Order Types: The user is advised to use limit orders for better control over contract acquisition, especially if market orders are not processing successfully.
  • Further Assistance: If issues persist, the user is encouraged to contact Fidelity customer support for additional help with their trading problems.

Guys, why can’t a place an option order @ 8:30 AM CST? Is that not when the market is open for me? Second, why is the options page slow, and crap out when I need it most? I tried working around this by not loading any dates when I open the chain by default and its still gets bogged down in speed. When I go to place an order, well into the market day, it won’t go through. I placed a market order on an option call it said it could not process the order. Do I set a limit to make sure I at least potentially get a contract instead since market orders don’t work? I can’t order at market value, how else do I make the options work? I can’t seem to work with it on a browser, mobile is not suitable when I want to compare multiple dates, how do I make this work??

Hi, @Spyugen. Limit orders and market orders are allowed during regular trading hours from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. ET. On the other hand, Extended Hours Trading (EHT)is available on the Fidelity Mobile app, Fidelity.com, and Active Trader Pro (ATP) from 7:00 a.m. to 9:28 a.m. ET (premarket) and 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. ET (after-hours). That being said, two stipulations must be met to trade options during the extended hours. First, EHT is only available for certain options orders placed through the Directed Trading Ticket and the Multi-Leg Option Trade ticket on ATP. Each exchange defines which securities are eligible for EHT To place an extended hours option trade, you must specifically choose “Pre-Market” in the “Session” dropdown on the trading tickets that support directed options trading. This session dropdown will only appear on options eligible to trade in the extended hours session. Second, to place an extended hours trade on ATP, click on “Trade and Orders,” then select “Directed Trade & Extended Hours.” The Directed Trading Options Ticket or Multi-Leg Option Trade Ticket allows you to view the bid/ask quotes, with size, on each of the available option exchanges. It is important to note that currently, only.SPX, .SPXW and . VIX options are eligible for pre-market trading. A session menu appears on the trade ticket for eligible securities during the pre-market. If you are unable to place your trade, please give us a call and a representative can assist you.
