Troubleshooting BRK/B Purchase Errors in the Fidelity App

Summary of User’s Issue and Solutions:

  • The main problem reported by the user, CrashNoctis, was that they were unable to purchase Berkshire Hathaway Inc (BRK/B) through the app due to error messages, despite tapping on the correct ticker.
  • Fidelity suggested that the error might stem from manually typing the ticker and recommended using the search function and the “Buy” button on the stock’s research page instead.
  • Fidelity also advised switching to the multi-screen trade ticket experience on the app, especially for tickers with a slash, and provided steps on how to do this.
  • CrashNoctis confirmed that using the multi-screen layout resolved the issue, allowing them to successfully place a trade for BRK/B.

In the app, efforts to purchase BRK/B error out (see photo). The error message says to try BRKB, but that ticker –as well as BRK.B– both force an autoresolve to BRK/B as well. I searched the company name as well, and only see BRK/A and BRK/B as options. Fidelity, can you help ? Image

Thanks for reaching out, @CrashNoctis. Berkshire Hathaway Inc (BRK/B) can be traded on both our website and mobile app. When placing the trade, the slash (/) may or may not be shown in the symbol field. Regardless of whether there is a slash in the symbol, the position is the same. When searching for the company name, tapping BRK/B will allow you to trade the security. The error results from manually typing the full symbol “BRK/B” into the trade ticket. You can also search for the security and click the green “Buy” button on the stock’s research page. Please let us know if we can help with anything else! 🟢

Hi @FidelityEmily – I did not manually enter the ticker in the trade ticket; I tapped on the search result (as you described in your reply), and the trade screen auto populated. No manual changes to the ticker. I tried again today and still receive the error and am prevented from executing the trade order.

Thanks for the additional information, @CrashNoctis. Are you, by chance, using the single-screen or multi-screen trade ticket within our app? If you’re using an Android device, we recommend confirming you’re using the multi-screen experience for tickers containing a slash. You can switch to our multi-screen experience in the general app settings by following the steps below once logged in. Switch to Multi-screen Experience on the Fidelity Mobile App: 1. Tap the profile icon in the upper right corner 2. Scroll to “Settings” and select “General settings” 3. Under the “Trade” heading, tap “Trade experience” and choose “Multi-screen” To further troubleshoot, please delete and reinstall the app, be sure it is the most up-to-date version, and try to place your trade again. In the meantime, you may try completing the trade from another device or through an internet browser. If this persists, we recommend reaching out to our Technical Support team so they can troubleshoot the issue with you. Associates are available Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. ET. Please say “technical support” when prompted by the automated system to be connected to the right group. Contact us: https://www.fidelity.com/customer-service/contact-us As always, should you come across any questions in the future, don’t hesitate to reach out. 🟢

Thank you for the deep dive on this one. Yes–I was using the Single-Screen Trade Ticket Layout (it’s so much cleaner–and faster!). But the multi-screen layout with the step-by-step trade prompts DID allow me to put in a trade for BRK/B.
Appreciate also the steps for how to change from single to multi-screen
